In 1953, two years before the Western States 100-Miles-One-Day Trail Ride formally began, Sir Edmund Hillary became the first person to successfully summit Mt. Everest. The two great challenges stand in close proximity throughout history to one another. According to a response posted on Quora.com, as of 2013 there were 4,042 different people who had summited Mt. Everest. Meanwhile, only 2,536 riders have earned their Tevis buckle by the same time. Another response on Quora.com estimates that about 1,000 people attempt the climb up Mt. Everest annually, with roughly half succeeding in their endeavor. Similarly, only about half of the riders who attempt Tevis complete the ride.
